We’ve been to Milan many times so it was a case of driving non stop around it on the Autostrada . Frankly it’s all a bit of an eyesore; endless industrial and office units astride the motorway.
So it was a pleasure to get to Bergamo and walk up to the Upper Town and its uniquely thick battlements (see photo) and tiny streets. We bought a simple lunch of bread and cheese and ate these overlooking the view.
Italy engulfs the senses and makes us feel instantly at home. There’s nowhere like it in Europe and that’s why we are spending the first two months of our gap year here. And already eight weeks doesn’t seem long enough for all its treasures.
