Getting out of the car in Vieste, Puglia felt different. The sun gleaming on the white walls. Workers disinfecting the pavements. Kids running around in the alleyways. Bright washing hanging over every balcony.
We have left manicured and ordered Umbria and Marche for the disorganised and disheveled south. Gone is renaissance beauty for authentic clutter. And at first there’s a feeling of “fish-out-of-water” – we were thinking this is good preparation for Chile, Ecuador or Paraguay.
But soon Vieste became more. It became a place to discover our AirBnB inside the old city. A place to have fun conversations with fishing folk and shop keepers. And a place to sit on rocks and watch the sun set.
The south is captivating us already.
