Looking at our maps in Santiago we set Ushuaia as our goal. And now after many long bus journeys we have arrived at the southernmost city in the world. The motto of Ushuaia is “the end of the world….and the beginning of everything”. But although we feel very south we are only at 55 degrees latitude which in the northern hemisphere corresponds to Middlesborough in northern England!
Situated on the Beagle Channel, it’s charismatic rather than photogenic. The story here is of change. Just like the Indians were replaced, today the historic wooden dwellings are being replaced by casinos, the backpackers by cruise ship travellers and forests by shanty town.
And it’s very expensive….
